Australia says at least 34 of its citizens are missing in Nepal following devastating floods and landslides that struck a region popular with tourists, trekkers and pilgrims. Foreign Minister Penny Wong said information remained “very limited” because of the scale of the disaster and difficult access, with the missing Australians believed to be travelling in separate pilgrimage and tour groups. Nepalese authorities said hundreds of foreign nationals were among the missing after a huge wall of mud and rock collapsed into a river near the Himalayan border with China’s Tibet. Officials said the disaster left at least 579 tourists missing, while police expected the death toll — already above 162 — to rise.
